Quilt City for Apple TV

Paducah, being sewn.

Every one of Paducah’s 13,250 parcels is a patch, cut to its real shape, in a cotton and a print of its own. The needle sews them on outward from downtown while the camera pulls back to the whole quilt. Then this year’s sales are re-sewn in gold, green and red, and the city is yours to explore, part of town by part of town, neighbourhood by neighbourhood.

What you’ll see

The opening, as it plays, and your first pick. The words on the dark glass are the TV’s own.

  1. Quilt CityPiecing, outward from downtown

The quilt fades in on a gallery wall, its shadow behind it, close on downtown: close enough to see every gingham check and every stitch. Then sixteen seconds of sewing. The needle puts every one of the city’s 13,250 parcels on, downtown first, then outward, and the camera follows it back until the whole quilt is in view as the last patch goes in.

  2. Quilt CityJanuary

This year’s 737 deeds are re-sewn day by day, January 1 to September 22, the month on the card. The thread turns gold where a parcel changed hands, green where it sold for more than last time, red where it sold for less, white where the price held.

  3. PaducahPaducahSwipe toward a part of town to choose it

The whole quilt, at rest. Then the seams between the parts of town come in, every part stays lit, and the city waits for your first swipe.

  4. Paducah › Midtown › Keiler ParkKeiler ParkBack for Midtown

Pick a part of town and click: the camera flies in and its patches are sewn on again from the middle out, each dropping in a little proud and settling. Pick a neighbourhood, and it happens again, closer.

The cloth

Sixteen cottons and seven prints. Every neighbourhood its own colour, every parcel its own cut of it. Seams sunk between the patches, a running stitch just inside every edge: cream thread on dark cloth, brown on light.

The streets

Muslin, showing between the patches the way the backing shows between a quilt’s blocks.

The Ohio

Indigo cloth, printed with waves, sewn along the city’s northern edge.

The city line

Bound in gold, all the way round.

The remote

The whole city, its 8 parts of town, and Paducah’s 52 neighbourhoods, from the City’s own neighbourhood map. A heavy sewn seam runs between the parts of town, a lighter one between the neighbourhoods.

    Swipe

Nothing is picked at first: the whole city is lit, waiting. Your first swipe picks the part of town lying that way, and the next ones move between them. Or click the edge of the pad.

  2. 2

    Click

Flies in, to a part of town and then to one of its neighbourhoods, and sews its patches on again from the middle out. In a neighbourhood, a click sews it once more. During the opening, a click skips to the whole quilt.

  3. 3

    Back

Up a level: neighbourhood, part of town, the whole city. From the city, Back takes you home.

The details

Your Apple TV

Apple TV 4K, with tvOS 18 or later. It runs smoothly even on the very first Apple TV 4K, from 2017.

No account. No ads. No tracking.

Open it and it sews. There’s nothing to sign up for, nothing to buy inside it, and nothing counting you.

No location, no internet needed

Quilt City never asks where you are, and it never goes online: all of Paducah is inside the app. It keeps nothing about you.

Cloth, not records

Shapes, prints and thread. No owner’s name, no address and no parcel number is ever on screen; the neighbourhood names are the City’s own.

The same voice

The voice from PVA Today for Apple TV sews along with the opening. Leave it be for two minutes at rest and the opening plays again, quietly. The screen stays awake while it’s open.

Privacy and support

What every Taxr app keeps, and what it doesn’t: privacy. A question, or something not right on your TV: write to us.
