Light roads

Light leaves downtown Paducah along every real road in the county, and keeps going until it reaches the edge.

The idea was called Ink in the streets: start on downtown, pull out to the county, and let the roads fill with light. It runs on the real road network, about 1,380 miles of it inside the county line. Three streams leave downtown, coral, blue and gold, and each road takes the colour of the main road its light left on.

The first pour: light running out of downtown Paducah along the real roads.

First time on production

the mccracken.properties homepage currently reads like AI.

So it went live, five hours after the first message, at a route the producer named on the spot: /tron. The first version poured the light and then rained parcels straight down onto it.

the parcel rain is kinda lame ngl but the glass roads are good enough for their own thing

The rain was split off (it gets its own chapter) and the roads alone became Light roads. It gained a parcel card on hover. Then: “i can’t click the link since it follows hover. maybe make it stick when clicked.” Click to pin has been on every piece since.

The whole county lit in gold, blue and coral lines of light
Light roads: the whole county lit, each road in the colour of the main road its light left downtown on.

Downtown’s glow was too much, “a bit busy … slightly less sunlike,” so the core was damped and the colour kept at the top instead of burning to white, and the street grid reads again. Later the roads got their own brightness dial, because they were “beautiful but so so bright.”

The film we didn’t keep

We tried generated video, with one rule from the start: it supplies the look, never the data. A film must never invent a parcel, a street or a value. Two five-second clips of an ink drop on black water came back.

One of them went onto /tron as a silent intro, once per visit, with a skip button. Then: “it was neat on its own but not really related to the light roads, so it seemed forced.” We swapped in the other clip. “It looked the same to me.” Both came from one prompt, so they were really two takes of the same idea. Twenty minutes later the intro was gone, and /tron opened on its own poster, fading into the live piece.

Coral, gold and blue branches of light on black
A frame of the generated intro. Pretty, and not about this county.
Lit roads seen from low over the county, with glass blocks falling from the sky
The roads seen from the side, as the rain experiment began. The next chapter.

The lesson stuck: anything generated has to start from the piece’s own frames, and two generations from the same prompt aren’t real alternatives.

Where it went

Light roads is still at /tron. Its idea of light travelling along the roads became the heart of the landing: the front page now pours in from the county line along the same roads.

  • The first pour of light along the roads.
  • Live at /tron: the first piece on production.
  • Light roads, with a card you can pin.
  • A generated intro: added, swapped, removed.
  • Downtown damped so the grid reads.
